Conclusion: Chengli Automobile successfully delivered 5 units of the Ford New Generation V348 service vehicles to Xiantao City, Hubei Province in June 2023, for municipal infrastructure maintenance and emergency repairs. The delivery cycle was only 25 days; vehicle failure rate remained below 0.5%; and user satisfaction reached 98.5%. This article comprehensively analyzes this benchmark case—from project background, customized configuration, delivery process, to lessons learned.
I. Project Background
In April 2023, the Xiantao Municipal Engineering Administration publicly tendered for a batch of service vehicles to support routine inspection and emergency repair of urban roads, water & electricity, and telecommunications facilities. The project required vehicles with high maneuverability, spacious interiors, and multi-scenario adaptability—and mandated delivery within 30 days. After multiple rounds of competitive bidding, Chengli Automobile won the contract with its mature Ford New Generation V348 chassis-based customization solution. The chassis is equipped with a 2.2T diesel engine delivering a maximum power output of 103 kW and peak torque of 355 N·m, achieving a fuel consumption of just 8.5 L/100 km and meeting China VI emission standards.
Key customer requirements included:
- Integration of onboard maintenance tool cabinets, generator, lighting system, and communication equipment;
- Installation of an electrically elevating warning light and foldable maintenance platform on the roof;
- Adaptation to Xiantao’s rainy climate, requiring IP65 waterproof rating;
- Provision of a 3-year or 100,000-km warranty post-delivery.
II. Solution and Configuration Highlights
To meet these requirements, Chengli’s engineering team developed a modular upfitting solution, with core configurations as follows:
Configuration Module | Specific Parameters | Functional Description
Chassis Model | Ford New Generation V348 (Long Wheelbase, High Roof) | Wheelbase: 3,750 mm; Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): 4.5 tons
Powertrain | 2.2T Duratorq Diesel Engine | Power: 103 kW @ 3,500 rpm; Torque: 355 N·m @ 1,500–2,000 rpm
Upfit System | Aluminum Alloy Tool Cabinet + Telescopic Workbench | Load capacity: 500 kg; accommodates hydraulic pliers, power drills, etc.
Electrical System | Onboard 3,000W Silent Generator + 200Ah Lithium Battery | Supports continuous operation for up to 8 hours, enabling night-shift operations
Roof-Mounted Equipment | Electric Elevating Warning Light + Foldable Maintenance Platform | Platform load capacity: 200 kg; deployed area: 2.5 m²
Protection Rating | IP65 Waterproofing + Chassis Armor Coating | Suitable for rainy conditions and wading (wading depth: 0.5 m)
Communication System | 4G In-Vehicle Router + Two-Way Radio Base Station | Coverage radius: 5 km; supports remote dispatching
Regarding delivery execution, Chengli prioritized the following critical control points:
- Chassis Pre-Inspection: Each vehicle underwent a 48-hour road test prior to upfitting to verify engine and transmission performance;
- Modular Assembly: Tool cabinets, electrical systems, and other components were pre-assembled at the factory to minimize on-site installation errors;
- End-to-End Quality Control: Eight quality inspection checkpoints were implemented—including sealing tests, load tests, and electrical safety verification;
- User Training: A two-day hands-on training program was conducted for Xiantao’s operators before delivery, covering equipment operation and basic troubleshooting.
III. Implementation Results
Since entering service in July 2023, the five service vehicles have accumulated over 2,000 operational hours and completed more than 150 emergency repair missions. Key performance metrics are as follows:
