Datong Dongfeng D6 3-cubic-meter Blue License Plate Sludge Dump Truck: Government Procurement Case and Chassis Selection Strategy Analysis
In the municipal sanitation sector, sludge handling has long been one of the most persistent urban management challenges. Particularly in northern cities such as Datong—characterized by harsh winters and complex road conditions—the reliability, off-road capability, and ease of maintenance of sludge transport vehicles are subject to heightened requirements. Recently, a municipal sanitation department launched a public tender for a batch of blue license plate sludge dump trucks and ultimately selected the 3-cubic-meter model equipped with the Dongfeng D6 chassis. This article takes this case as its entry point to conduct an in-depth analysis of the chassis selection logic and compares mainstream chassis options—including Dongfeng, Sinotruk HOWO, Foton Times, and FAW Jiefang—to provide practical reference for government procurement.
Case Background: Procurement Requirements of a Datong Municipal Sanitation Department
The Urban Management Bureau of a district in Datong sought to address sludge transportation needs arising from wastewater treatment plants and septic tank cleaning operations within its jurisdiction. It planned to procure a batch of blue license plate sludge dump trucks, specifying the following requirements: vehicles must be operable with a Class C1 driver’s license; gross vehicle weight must not exceed 4.5 tons; cargo box capacity should be approximately 3 cubic meters; self-unloading functionality is mandatory; and vehicles must reliably start in low winter temperatures and handle complex road conditions. According to publicly released tender information, the budget was capped at approximately RMB 111,000–133,000 per unit.
After comprehensive evaluation, five Chengli 3-cubic-meter blue license plate sludge dump trucks mounted on the Dongfeng D6 chassis were delivered. Customer feedback indicates outstanding performance in load-bearing capacity, off-road capability, and post-sale maintenance support. These units are now operational across multiple residential communities and industrial zones.

Analysis:
Load Capacity & Off-road Capability: The Dongfeng D6 chassis features a 3.5-ton rear axle and 185R15LT tires, combined with a minimum ground clearance of 200 mm. When fully loaded with 3 cubic meters of sludge (approximately 3 tons), the chassis retains ample safety margin and easily negotiates potholed roads in both urban Datong and suburban areas. Although the Foton Times chassis offers a higher-rated 4.2-ton rear axle, its wider 195 mm tires raise the vehicle’s center of gravity slightly, resulting in marginally reduced cornering stability.
